There was a soldier and a sailor went a-walking one day.
Said the soldier to the sailor, ‘I’ve a great mind to pray.
I’ve a great mind to pray for the souls of great men
And whoever I pray for you must say “Amen”’.
‘Well, the first thing we’ll pray for, ’twill be for good wives.
That we may live happy for the rest of our lives.
And if we get one wife that we may get ten
That we never, never, never get a bad wife’
Says the sailor, ‘Amen’.
‘And the next one we’ll pray for ’twill be for John Dillon
That he may make a good speech whenever he is willin’.
And when he makes one speech that he may make ten.
May he never, never, never make a bad speech’
Says the sailor, ‘Amen’.
‘And the next thing we’ll pray for, ’twill be for Parnell.
The landlords and the bailiffs we’ll send them to hell.
And if they get one hell that they may get ten.
May the rubble, trouble, double-devil damn them!’
Says the sailor, ‘Amen’.
