The Croppy Boy (Early Early)
Source: Where The Linnets Sings (2026)
Location: Track 6
’Twas early, early all in the spring,
The small birds whistled and sweetly did sing.
Changing their notes love from tree to tree,
And the song they sang was ‘old Ireland free.
Oh early, early on Thursday night,
The cursed yeomen gave me a fright,
Gave me a fright and a sudden fall,
And I was taken by Lord Cornwall.
’Twas in his parlour my trial went on
And in assizes I had to stand.
With sentence hard and courage low,
To New Geneva Gaol I was forced to go.
I wore the red and I wore the blue.
I wore all colours that were just and true.
I wore all colours plain to be seen,
And on my breast I wore the bunch of green.
Oh when I am dead and going to my grave,
A decent funeral please let me have.
Five hundred Ribbonmen to carry me
To let the world know I died for liberty.
